“A Book that Surprised the World…”

90 years ago, in January 1928, the journal “Oktyabr” published the first chapters of the novel «And Quiet Flows the Don» by M.A.Sholokhov, one of the greatest works of the world literature. The readers accepted the novel enthusiastically: already in January and February the journal received thousands of letters with response.
Black Date in the History of the Cossacks

January 24, is a mournful date in the history of Cossacks. On that day in 1919, a meeting of the Organizing Bureau of the Russian Communist Party (of Bolsheviks) Central Committee was held to adopt a text of the “Circular Letter of the Central Committee on the Attitude to the Cossacks”. That document marked a beginning of repressions against the Cossacks and gave rise to the Upper Don insurrection, which is the central theme of the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” by M.A.Sholokhov.

On January 20, 2018, in Sholokhov-Centre, the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov and “Amapola” producer centre announced a joint educational project “National Evenings”. It was opened by a musical evening “Russian Winter”.
New Exhibits in the Estate of M.A.Sholokhov

The exhibition section “Matches Collection of M.A.Sholokhov” is added with new exhibits given by the writer’s family. The entered matchboxes are unique with their labels. Among them there is a set of matchboxes with pictures of bugs brought from Finland; a set of matchboxes with pictures of European castles purchased while travelling about the German Democratic Republic; a set of matchboxes with pictures of different roses made in Sweden. There are unique matchboxes brought from Japanese hotels “Gifu” and “Nara” in 1966.

The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov for the first time took part in the international flashmob “Museum Selfie”, which ran on January 17, 2018, in many museums of the world. According to the analytical company Brand Analytics the action was joined by 9 266 412 users in the Russian Internet.
