Monuments to M.A. Sholokhov

Admirers of the talent of M.A. Sholokhov set up monuments connected with the name of the writer in different parts of our country and abroad. It is a tribute for this wonderful man, who considered honourable for himself “to serve with his pen to the working people”.

It is kept in the collection of the State M.A. Sholokhov Museum-Reserve. Entered from the house of M.A. Sholokhov in 1985, from the writer’s wife, Mariya Petrovna Sholokhova.
E.V. Vuchetich worked over the bust in Rostov, where the writer came for the meeting with his electors. The sculptor recollected: “Mikhail Alexanrovich and I met in the hotel “Moskovskaya”. Sholokhov said humorously: “If I have decided to get myself perpetuated, let’s begin then. And we’ll see what will come out…” It was difficult to work. All the time Sholokhov was visited by people, and Mikhail Alexandrovich talked with them for a long time. He also went to the meetings with the electors. Usually I could begin working over the portrait only late at night. We talked with Mikhail Alexandrovich discussing literary and other subjects. Sometimes our talks went far long over midnight. The work over the portrait lasted several days, to be more exact, several evenings and nights. I am happy that my dream has come true”.

A bust of M.A. Sholokhov

It was set up on May, 23, 1981, at the Don River embankment of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, the Rostov Region.
The pedestal bears an inscription: “The Hero of Socialist Labour, the writer Sholokhov Mikhail Alexandrovich, was awarded the Order of Lenin and the second Gold medal “Sickle and Hammer” for outstanding merits in the development of Soviet literature by the Decree of the USSR Supreme Soviet Presidium of May, 23, 1980.
Having made the bust sketches, the authors of the project came to Vyoshenskaya in November, 1980, on the writer’s invitation. In the sketches M.A. Sholokhov was portrayed wearing a Russian blouse. The writer examined  the given variant attentively and asked: “Put a field shirt on me, please”. The authors of the bust followed the writer’s wish.

the height is 3 m, the height of the pedestal is 1m.
The figure of the writer is full-sized. The monument was put up in May of 2000 in Rostov-on-Don, at the Don River embankment, in commemoration of the 95th anniversary of M.A. Sholokhov.

A monument to M.A. Sholokhov (Moscow)
Sculptors:

the height is 4 m, the ground is 8,4x8,3 m.
The monument opening ceremony was held on November, 30, 2001, at the crossing of Volzhskiy Boulevard and Volgograd Prospect of Moscow.

A monument to M.A. Sholokhov (Uralsk, Kazakhstan).
Sculptor:
Esken Amanzholovich Serghebayev (1940), the laureate of the State Prize of the Kazakhstan SSR (1982).
Material:
grey granite.
Sizes:
the height of the bust is 60 sm, the height of the pedestal is 2 m.
For long years the writer had been closely connected with Kazakhstan, he often visited Uralsk, Dariyinskoye Settlement. Here he had his rest, worked over his books, and it was in Kazakhstan, where M.A. Sholokhov learned about his awarding the Nobel Prize.
To commemorate these events the bust of M.A. Sholokhov  was put up in a town of Uralsk, the West-Kazakhstan Region, on August, 27, 2002.

A monument to M.A. Sholokhov (Nikolayevsk, the Volgograd Region).
Sculptor:

the height of the figure is 1 m 16 sm; the height of the pedestal is 1 m 20 sm;
The front of the pedestal bears a tablet: “Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov”. On the right and left of it there are relief pictures of the same type showing a horse Cossack stream. A bronze perimeter framing is concluded with a tablet bearing: “A sculptural composition is set up by a Group of companies “Grenadiers” (General director V.I. Gavrilov). May, 2005”.
The monument to the writer near his House-Museum and a commemorative tablet on its façade were opened in Nikolayevsk on May, 24, 2005.

A monument to M.A. Sholokhov (Boguchar, the Voronezh Region).

concrete, metal (copper), granite.

the height of the bust is 1 m; the height of the pedestal is 1,8 m.
The bust is made of concrete faced with red copper. The pedestal is made of concrete faced with red granite.
The bust was put up in the central Sholokhov alley of the city park. Its opening ceremony was held on September, 20, 2005.
Partly the means for the monument were gathered by the boarding school children, who worked in agricultural teams.

Size:
1,5-full-size.
The monument is made of bronze. The pedestal, paving and bench are made of granite. It is put up in the north-eastern part of Gogol Boulevard. The opening ceremony was held on May, 24, 2007, on the day of commemoration the 102nd anniversary of the writer.

A monument to M.A. Sholokhov (Millerovo, the Rostov Region).

The monument was put up in the alley of the Third International Street. The opening ceremony was held in the autumn of 2007, on September, 29, on the     Town Day holiday. M.A. Sholokhov is shown in full figure.
