December 15 is Formation Day of the UN Environmental Protection Organization

15.12.2020

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) was established in 1972 following the results of the 1st UN Conference on the Environment in Stockholm. As the main UN body in the field of the environment, UNEP develops a global environmental program, promotes the implementation of the environmental component of sustainable development within the UN system, and steadily advocates for the protection of the natural environment of the world.

Currently, modern society is faced with a choice: either to preserve the existing way of interacting with nature, which can inevitably lead to an ecological catastrophe, or to preserve the biosphere suitable for life, but for this it is necessary to change the existing type of human activity.

We can list a large number of names of those who, with their creativity, has awaken in people a sense of goodness and mercy, a respectful attitude towards the world around them, their native nature. But we would especially like to highlight the activities of Mikhail Sholokhov. “A rare writer has been given happiness to be so close to his land, so dissolve in it that his name has become inseparable from the land he praised, from the great quiet Don. We say: Sholokhov - and see endless steppes and people living on this ancient land. We say Don - and see before us - one of the most attractive names of the 20th century - Mikhail Sholokhov,” Vitaly Zakrutkin wrote.

Mikhail Sholokhov was constantly aware of all environmental protection measures carried out on the territory of the district (in particular by the forestry enterprise), he strictly condemned everything that, to one degree or another, caused damage to the Don nature.

He was an ardent opponent of deforestation, opposed the use of pesticides in the fight against pests of tree plantations, called for the use of biological products. Thanks to the multifaceted nature conservation activities of Mikhail Sholokhov, the forests of the Upper Don regions were saved.

So let's continue the deal, which was started by our great fellow countryman, take care of the environment and instill a love for nature in our children.
