Spatterdock

Spatterdock is a kind of ancient household utensils popular in the Don region. Such dishes were made of calabash (Lagenaria).

Spatterdocks were used for storing water, wine, oil, milk and other liquids. In summer, haymakers used to take water or kvass in spatterdocks for keeping the contents cold and fresh. They were also used for storing salt, flour and pepper.

As well, in old times, spatterdocks were used for keeping gold and money.

At present, spatterdocks are still grown in the Don region, though for decorative purposes now.
