Chieftain Regiment Badge

The badge of the Life guard of the Chieftain His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Regiment was entered in the collection of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov late in December of 2012.

The badge was made in Saint-Perersburg. It is a silver shako regiment blazon of the time of Emperor Nicholas I. It bears a golden Polish cross of Virtuti Militari in reminiscence of the Battle of Warsaw, where the regiment distinguished itself.

In the middle the cross is overlaid with a golden monogram of Emperor Nicholas II edged with a white enamel circle with a green wreath on it. A small shield under the cross bears a golden letter A flanked by embossed anniversary dates: 1775 – 1875.

It is a very rare item. The badge acquired by the Museum lacks the cross overlay with the golden monogram.

The badge was approved on April, 9, 1910, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Chieftain Regiment, in which the Upper Don Cossacks served before the Revolution of 1917. The service in this excellent military unit was considered honourable, and selection of recruits was very strict.
