In May of 1975, the Presidium of the World Peace Council awarded M.A.Sholokhov the International Peace Prize in culture for outstanding contribution into strengthening peace and friendship between peoples. On July, 10, 1975, the General Secretary of the WPC, Romesh Chandra, handed in this award to Mikhail Alexandrovich in the sanatorium “Barvikha”, where the writer was recovering. Handing in the award R.Chandra underlined, that the members of the Stockholm session with a great enthusiasm adopted a decision of awarding.
R.Chandra noted: “It is widely known, what a great contribution was made by you, Mikhail Alexandrovich, into the expansion of cultural cooperation between peoples. You are one of the members of the Wroclaw Congress of Culture for Peace, who was at the origin of the peace movement; you have done a lot for uniting workers of culture standing for peace.
Your outstanding works, passionate speeches in defence of peace, against the threat of a new war gained for you a deep respect of millions of people on all the continents.”
Taking the award M.A.Sholokhov said: “This honorary award obliges me, as a writer and a member of the peace movement, to do much more. I think, we, writers and all workers of culture, should do a lot now to help to provide a lasting peace on earth and put an end to the danger of war forever. As for me, I won’t spare all my strengths for it.”
The award is a metal stele topped with two equal halves of the globe image. On their surface there are palms outstretched towards each other symbolizing friendship of East and West. Now the award is presented at the historical and memorial exhibition “M.A.Sholokhov.Time and Destiny.”
