A Present for M.A. Sholokhov for His 70th Anniversary
A set made up of a jug, two cups and a tray was presented to M.A. Sholokhov for his 70th anniversary by the Secretariate of the CPSU Central Committee.
The writer’s birthday was on May, 24, but because of his being ill and hospitalized the present for Mikhail Alexandrovich was handed in on July, 7, 1975, in Moscow, in the building of the CPSU Central Committee. At present the set is kept in the Museum-Reserve holding.
The outer sides of the jug and cups are decorated with dices, horizontal filigree cover plates with an enamel floral ornament of white, blue and red colours on them. Enamel free surfaces of the pieces and the tray are gilded.
The top of the jug bears: “To Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov on his birthday from the Secretariate of the CPSU Central Committee. May, 24, 1975”.
The trade marks on the pieces show, that the set was made by the workers of the Leningrad production company “Russkie Samotsveti” in 1973-1974.
The company “Russkie Samotsveti” was founded in 1912 according to the order of the emperor Nikolay II, and in the course of its activity it was transformed several times. The trade mark “Russkie Samotsveti” is famous for a perfectly high quality of metal processing. The articles of the company were sold at the auctions of Sotheby’s and Christie’s, their unique copies are exposed in the Museums of the Moscow Kremlin and in the Hermitage, several exclusive articles were acquired for perpetual keeping in the Diamond Fund of Russia.
