NewsThe Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov is the Finalist of the National Prize “Crystal Compass”05.05.2015The project “Pearl of Russia” of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve has become the finalist of the national prize “Crystal Compass” and claims the victory in the nomination “The Best Social and Information Project for the Conservation of Natural, Historical and Cultural Heritage”. The Museum project is aimed at conservation, restoration of the natural biodiversity and replenishment of the Upper Don flora with new plant species, improvement of agricultural landscapes, strengthening of friendly relations between the peoples of Russia, near and far foreign countries. Thanks to the efforts of several generations of the local foresters, pine forests have grown on the sands of the Sholokhov District. The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov seeks to create mixed forest on the hilly sands. None of the municipal entity of the Russian Federation has such a project. On the territory of the created forest (4 ha) there are 66 personal plots reflecting predominant species composition of forests of the 25 subjects of the Russian Federation, 5 contiguous states and 36 countries of the Eurasian continent. The main species of the forest is the Crimean pine with the arboreal species most typical for a particular region of the European countries chosen as satellites. Last year, the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov presenting the project “Museum-Reserve as an Institution of Ecological Education and Environmental Awareness of the Population” became the prize finalist in the nomination “Education” conceding the victory only to the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far East Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This year, over 170 projects have been received for the competition from the participants from 75 cities and settlements of Russia and 10 foreign countries.
