The School of Karghin Celebrates Its Jubilee

14.01.2014

The secondary school of Karghin, which history is inseparably connected with the name of M.A.Sholokhov, the great writer and our countryman,  celebrates its jubilee. 50 years ago the school moved into a beautiful two-storey building. The writer donated his Lenin Prize for the novel “Virgin Soil Upturned” for construction of the school building.

Previously the school was housed in three old buildings of the late XIX century. In 1960, having come from a foreign trip Sholokhov applied to D.S.Polyansky, the First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, with a petition of constructing a school, and when the issue was settled he sent a telegram to Karghin villagers:

“Having come to my native land I am glad to tell my dear countrymen that the construction of a new school in Karghinskaya, according to the resolution of the RSFSR Council of Ministers, will begin this year. The Lenin Prize I have got will be donated for the construction of a new school instead of the one I went to long ago to learn reading and writing. I embrace affectionately all Karghin villagers. Your Mikhail Sholokhov.”

There are photos, newspapers, memoirs of the stanitsa’s old residents telling about this important event. The new school opened its doors for the young villagers in January of 1964. It was a real holiday for the Karghin villagers. All the children, teachers and parents were deeply grateful for M.A.Sholokhov and wished him good health, long years of life and great success in his noble work.

50 years have passed since then. The primary schoolchildren have become grandparents, but they still remember that day and like to tell about this event. Their grandchildren are proud of living in Karghinskaya and go to school bearing the name of the great Sholokhov.
