NewsWelcome to the Festival of “Kruzhilin Toloki”!22.07.2013On September, 14, the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve invites you for the literary and ethnographic festival “Kruzhilin Toloki”. The participants of the event get an opportunity to travel a hundred years back, to live one day a life of a Cossack family of the late XIX– early the XX centuries, to feel the atmosphere of the Cossack mode of life and meet with the personages of Sholokhov’s works. It is a labour day, when you can try mowing and raking hay, oxen ploughing the earth, winnowing grain, grinding flour with millstones, working with sledgehammer, mastering the art of pottery, basket weaving, fishing net weaving, making brooms and painting wooden spoons. Cossack women will show how to churn butter, spin with an old spinning wheel, crochet and knitting, make pancakes and dumplings. A good custom of giving a free help to the neighbours in rural works was called “toloki” by Cossacks. The museum workers will show a reconstruction of the old Cossack customs, traditional modes of the Don land use, and everyone can take part in the work and holiday festivities. The best folk groups from the Rostov, Volgograd and Voronezh regions will perform at the festival. Since 2010, the festival “Kruzhilin Toloki” has been held annually in the first half of September in the Cossack farmstead of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve.
