Sholokhov's Anniversary Celebrated in Kazakhstan

22.05.2020

The memorial museum of Mikhail Sholokhov in the Republic of Kazakhstan held contests for the writer’s anniversary dedicated to his work, and on May 25, 2020, the report “Mikhail Sholokhov and Kazakhstan Writers” will be presented at the online conference.

Competitions of school essays on the topic of military prose by Mikhail Sholokhov and reading excerpts of his works were held with the support of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in the city of Uralsk remotely.

In another online competition, teachers and librarians take part. Participants talk about their perception of the writer's works and read extracts from his books. Contest assistance is provided by the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in the city of Uralsk, the public cultural and educational fund "Old Uralsk" and the Center for Russian Culture of the West Kazakhstan Region.

On May 25, an online conference will be held dedicated to the Days of Slavic Writing and Culture, at which the Director of the Memorial Museum of Mikhail Sholokhov (Darinskoye, Kazakhstan) Olga Chekanova will make a presentation “Mikhail Sholokhov and Kazakh Writers” and present new materials on the presence of Mikhail Sholokhov in Kazakhstan.

Sholokhov visited Kazakhstan many times, showed great attention to Kazakh literature, spoke here at writers' congresses, and had a great influence on the work of many writers of the republic. In Uralsk, they often quote words once said by Mikhail Sholokhov: “I am a Cossack in the Don, and Kazakh in the Urals”.
