February 21 is Memory Day of M.A.Sholokhov

09.02.2018

On February 21, 2018, it is the 34th anniversary of the death of Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov, the great Russian writer, Nobel Prize winner in literature, singer of the Don country. Readers’ conferences, exhibitions, meetings and performances will be devoted to this date.

Before the Memory Day, on February 20, a round-table meeting “Sholokhov’s Heroes in Modern World” will be held in Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov within the project of social partnership “Cultural Heritage”. It will be joined by the students of the Institute of Philology, Journalism and Intercultural Communication of the Southern Federal University and school number 87 named after the USSR Hero N.M.Shcherbakov. They will discuss questions of modern perception of Sholokhov’s works by the younger generation and will try to answer the question “Who is he, the hero of the modernity?” The experts will be the teachers of the Southern Federal University and secondary schools of Rostov-on-Don. The “round-table” will begin at 12.00.

In the morning of the 21 of February, the admirers of the writer’s work, representatives of the creative intellectuals, public organizations and cultural institutions will lay flowers in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya – at the tomb of M.A.Sholokhov and at the bust of the writer at the embankment of Vyoshenskaya, and in Rostov – at the monument at the River Don embankment and at the bust in Pushkin Street.

On that day in the district Palace of Culture there will be held a meeting devoted to the memory of M.A.Sholokhov. The audience will be shown a literary and musical performance “My Dear…” which will tell about the writer’s family, his relatives and friends, about the events – happy and others, after all,  everything was common there – both the slightest bitterness, and great joy”. The meeting begins at 15.00.

In Rostov, in the multimedia area of Sholokhov-Centre, on February 21, there will open a photo exhibition “I was Born at the Don…” about the life and work of M.A.Sholokhov, about the world significance of his spiritual heritage, public activity and meetings with well-known people.

On that day the visitors of Sholokhov-Centre will be shown a performance “The Shame Child” based on the title story by M.A.Sholokhov (staged by F.Naret, Comedy Theatre “Klassika”).

The hero of the performance is a quick seven-year old boy Minka as his father called him and Mikhailo Fomich – as his grandfather did. And for other villagers he was Nakhalyonok (the shame child). It is a naïve, lively and bright boy living on stage with the fullness of emotions bestowed on him by nature in the difficult time of the Soviet Power formation.

The audience will enjoy the actors’ performance, after all, each of the personages is an image fixed in the historical memory of the people, it produces a bright impression about the characters and lives, tragedy of death and fratricide, strength and courage, kindness and humour. The performance begins at 10.00, 13.00, 15.00.
