Sholokhov Museum Welcomes to the Holiday “Steed is the Dearest for Cossack”

A literary ethnographic holiday “Steed is the Dearest for Cossack” will take place on May 7, 2017, at the Stables of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov. This holiday of Cossack martial arts of Vyoshenskaya is dedicated to the Great Victory Day and the birthday of the great Russian writer Mikhail Sholokhov.

This holiday, which main heroes are a Cossack and his faithful horse is held annually early in May. Within a short period the Cossack martial arts of Vyoshenskaya have become very popular: the holiday was entered into the National Event Calendar, and in the previous year it gained the first place in the nomination “The Best Event on Spreading the National Traditions and Trades” in the finale of the National Award in the field of event tourism “RussianEventAwards”.

The horse has always taken a special place in the life of Cossacks: it was a help in household, an integral part of the military life and a faithful friend. The holiday guests will learn about the Don Cossack traditions, about preparation of little Cossacks for military service and about taking care of horses. Here, every guest becomes not only a spectator, but also an active participant in the fascinating action, tries himself in the role of brave horseman, takes part in competitions of Cossack martial arts, shows his strength, courage and rifle skills, archery, javelin throwing, wielding a sword and a whip.

The artistic and ethnographic composition based on the works by M.A.Sholokhov will take the audience into the early XX century. They will learn how in old days a recruit was equipped and seen off to defending his native land, will visit a Cossack field camp described in the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” by M.A.Sholokhov, will hear Cossack songs performed by folk groups.

Everyone will be brightly impressed with a horse-show – an exciting horse racing, horse jumping, riding, Cossack battle mastery, Cossack mass attack, wielding a sword and a lance.

Children will be enjoyed playing an adventure game “Following the Veshki (landmarks) to Come to Vyoshki” and will learn a lot of new and interesting things about the Sholokhov country.

During the holiday one can have a ride on a horse or a pony, and in carriage, have a pleasure boating on the Tsaryov Pond, take part in interactive activities and master-classes, taste field camp porridge, have photos taken and buy souvenirs.

This is an outdoor holiday, so you should see about your hats and comfortable shoes to wear.
