The Year of Russian Cinema

28.01.2016

The year of 2016 was announced by the Presidential Decree the Year of Russian Cinema, and a set of substantive steps aimed at development of the national cinema and strengthening its position on the international arena has been planned already.

Namely in 2016 there are two significant jubilees – the 120th anniversary of the first film show in Russia and the 80th anniversary of the “Soyuzmultfilm” studio. It is known already that the cinemas will hold Night and Day of Russian Cinema with Russian films show for free.

The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov has planned a number of interesting events dedicated to the Year of Russian Cinema. Sholokhov’s works were widely embodied in the films. The first screen version of the novel “The Quiet Don” (the film-directors O.Preobrazhenskaya and I.Pravov) was made in 1930, and the last one made by S.Ursulyak was released late in the previous year. In all, 16 screen versions on the works by M.A.Sholokhov were released in different years.

In February, Sholokhov Museum jointly with the State A.S.Pushkin Museum will hold in Moscow a creative meeting with the film crew of S.Ursulyak, where the onlookers will be able to share their impressions of the film, to ask their questions and learn about the significance of the work of M.A.Sholokhov for the film-director and the actors who performed in the film.

In April, in “Sholokhov Centre” of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov in Rostov-on-Don, a large exhibition “Sholokhov’s Personages in the Cinema” will begin its run. It will show the materials telling about all the 16 films made on the writer’s books.

The theme of the All-Russian literary and folklore holiday “Sholokhov Spring” will also be connected with cinema and Sholokhov’s personages in the films.

In the Year of Cinema we will mark a number of anniversaries connected with filming of Sholokhov’s works. It is the 85th anniversary of the premiere of the film “The Quiet Don” made by O.Preobrazhenskaya and I.Pravov, and in this very year we mark the birth anniversaries of both the film-directors. The jubilee dates are also connected with the second filming of the novel: it is the 110th anniversary of the film-director S.Gerasimov and the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the film shooting in Dichensky Village the Kamensk District. 10 years have passed from the show of the first episode of the TV version of “The Quiet Don” made by S.Bondarchuk. This date will be a reason for discussion of the difficult work conceived by the talented film-director.

There are significant dates connected with other films of S.Bondarchuk. 40 years ago the film “They Fought for Their Country” was recognized to be “The Best Film of the Year” in the USSR and won a number of awards of the international film festivals in Karlovy Vary and Panama. It will be the 60th anniversary of publication of the story “The Fate of a Man”. The wonderful film

made after it by the film-director became “The Best Film of the Year” in 1959, and gained a number of Soviet and foreign awards.

The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov will do its best in the Year of Russian Cinema to please the visitors with interesting creative projects.
