Grow the Forest for Descendants

02.03.2015

In 2013, the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov with the active support by the Rostov Region Government laid a forest, a “Park of Peoples’ Friendship”, near the airport of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya.

During the two past years, on the area of more than 4 ha there were laid personal sites of the teams of the children and youth environmental movement “Sholokhov Source” from the 27 constituents of the Russian Federation (the Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Astrakhan, Moscow, Lipetsk, Belgorod, Ryazan, Saratov, Tambov and Tula regions, Krasnodar and Stavropol territories, Kalmykia, Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria republics) and from  the near foreign countries (Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Abkhazia and Georgia).

In 2014, the boundaries of the Park of Peoples’ Friendship were greatly expanded: there were laid the sites, where the leading scientists from Germany, Austria, Hungary, Greece and Finland, who took part in the International conference on steppe research, as well as the members of “Sholokhov Readings” from Indonesia, Iran and Azerbaijan, planted their trees.

The geography of the participants in planting trees in the Park of Peoples’ Friendship is still expanding, and this area has become “a pearl” of Eurasia, where any representative of the mainland can make his contribution into landscaping of the sand massif near Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya.

The main tree species of the array is the Crimean pine. As satellites there were chosen the tree species brought from different regions of Russia and near foreign countries. Along with the plants of the steppe and forest-steppe zones, on the hummocky sands there appeared species of dry steppes and semideserts (calligonum, tamarix, winterfat, eurotia, saxaul) and subtropical plants unusual for our zone (ginkgo biloba, hackberry, pinus radiate, smooth sumac).

The Park of People’s Friendship has an alley of “Sholokhov Source” movement activists and guests of honour. It can be added with new seedlings planted by the members of the action “Grow the forest for Descendants” dedicated to the 110thanniverssry of M.A.Sholokhov. The action will be held on March, 20, International Forest Day, by the Museum-Reserve.
