“I Understand Her Deeply, to Pain”

24.11.2015

90 years ago, on November, 25, 1925, the well-known Soviet and Russian theatre and cinema actress Nonna (Noyabrina) Viktorovna Mordyukova was born (November, 25, 1925, Konstantinovka, Artyom Okrug, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, – June, 6, 2008, Moscow, Russia). She was the People’ Actress of the USSR, the winner of the Stalin Prize the First Degree and the State RSFSR Prize of Vasilyev Brothers.

The Editorial Council of the British encyclopedia “Who is Who” declared her as one of the first ten outstanding actresses of the XX century. On the screen Mordyukova brilliantly embodied the images of ordinary women of hard inescapable fate, of inflexible strength and dignity.

In the film “They Fought for Their Country” made by the film-director Sergei Bondarchuk after the title novel by M.A.Sholokhov Mordyukova acted a role of a soldier’s wife Nataliya.

Answering the questions of the Rostov journalist Yelena Dzhichoyeva during the filming of “They Fought for Their Country” the actress said: “Now you are asking me about my attitude to this role. Generally, I have a tenet to treat each role with a complete seriousness and full dedication. Not being afraid of big words, I enter each of my roles really like I would enter a burning hut. With incredible fear and all the courage yet I have got. In this film I went into the role of a soldier’s wife Nataliya. During the war, battles and occupation, I have seen lots of such women and simply can’t act them indifferently. I understand them deeply, to pain. Here, Lopakhin (Shukshin) pesters her, but she drives him away, even beat him. But meanwhile she surely likes him, she may even love him a little already. A lucky guy. Poses himself as too bold. But it’s because of his diffidence disguised by bravado, a simulated prowess. But Nataliya wouldn’t overstep the line. Her husband is out on the front. It’s impossible! And Lopakhin understands it and doesn’t take offence.”

The film “They Fought for Their Country” with Nonna Mordyukova has become one of the best films about the Great Patriotic War.
