Did You Read “And Quiet Flows the Don” Carefully?
27.07.2015In the year of the 110th anniversary of M.A.Sholokhov and the Year of Literature in Russia, the students of the Institute of Philology, Journalism and Intercultural Communication of the Southern Federal University conducted a survey in Rostov-on-Don in Pushkin Street to find out if the Rostovites read the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” carefully.
The works by the world known Don writer are especially appreciated for truthfulness of depicting life and for the original, beautiful, authentic language of the people. The vocabulary of the works by M.A.Sholokhov is an interweaving of rich Don dialects and the literary language. Often, reading the works containing dialect words, the people do not understand the meaning of most of them and do not think over what they are reading.
We live in the Don country, and the works by M.A.Sholokhov play an important role in preservation of our cultural heritage. The survey of the population included the most poplar words from the “Vocabulary of the Language of M.A.Sholokhov” given in the context for easier understanding.
