The Restoration of the Museum Site has Come to Completeness

21.07.2015

In the Roofed Barn on the farmstead of T.A.Karghin, which is an object of cultural heritage, in Stanitsa Karghinskaya the Bokovsky District (the Rostov Region), it was envisaged to restore an architectural and artistic appearance of the facades and interiors and to adapt the building for accommodation of the exhibition providing an opportunity of exposing large exhibits and of their storage in the premises of the Barn.

The character of the projected engineering and technical solutions was determined by the need to restore the operation qualities of the reinforced structures enabling their subsequent operation.

The Roofed Barn as a part of the farmstead manufacturing area completes its north-western structure in L-shape. The building was constructed on the territory of the formed in the 1900-s mill complex of T.A.Karghin and was historically connected with the literary and working activity of M.A.Sholokhov. The building of the Roofed Barn is a part of the stanitsa’s farmstead ensemble of the early XX century and is an example of a farm building in brick style.

Late in the XIX–early in the XX centuries, Karghin Village was a shopping centre. Once a month there ran bustling fairs gathering people from the Upper Don stanitsas, villages and the cities of Novocherkassk, Boguchar, Voronezh, Lugansk and others. At the fair lasting for a week or more, they sold cattle, wheat, foods and agricultural tools. The fairs took place in autumn, after the crops were gathered, when the changing weather forced to hide somewhere. The enterprising Timofey Karghin knew how to adapt to the demands of the time, let out his shed on hire to the mongers for storing their carts full of food.

The scientific project documentation for the restoration of the Roofed Barn was performed by M.A.Chestnov, the chief architect of the Institute for Restoration of Monuments of History and Culture “Spetsproyektrestavratsiya”. The works were carried out by the specialized organization of the Limited Liability Company “Stary Don” directed by S.M. Yermolovich. The group of restorers following a thorough methodical study managed to preserve the authenticity of the monument and to restore the integrity and style of the time of the farmstead manufacturing area of T.A.Karghin.
