The Exhibition “Traces of Cossack Old Times…” in “Sholokhov-Centre”

01.06.2015

The exhibition “Traces of Cossack Old Times…” from the collection of the State Hermitage, the main museum in Russia and the major museum of the world, has a successful run in the recently opened new site of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve in Rostov-on-Don.

The exhibition displays the works of painting, graphics, sculpture, arts and crafts, armaments and military ammunition, books and monuments of faleristics of the XVIII–XX centuries. The vast majority of the exhibits have never been demonstrated in the southern regions of our country, many of the monuments are published for the first time.

The visitors will see unique works of fine arts connected with the history of Russian Cossacks and glorifying their combat exploits including one of the earliest “Cossack” painting portraits – a portrait of V.P.Orlov, the Don chieftain, cavalry general, painted by an unknown painter in 1800, portraits of representatives of the famous Russian Cossacks M.I.Platov, V.V.Orlov-Denisov, V.D.Ilovaisky and others, as well as the portraits of Russian emperors and the members of the Emperor’s family dressed in the uniforms of the Cossack Guard regiments painted by Russian and West European artists. Among the items of arts and crafts connected with the history of Russian Cossacks there are famous “war” plates bearing polychrome images of the Russian army uniforms including those of Cossack Guards.

In a wide display there are collections of armament and military ammunition, the military and civilian suit of the XVIII–XX centuries, rare examples of banners including a “project” Cossack banner of the late XVIII–early XIX centuries and a banner of the Life Guards Cossack regiment dated 1800, medals and orders including those dedicated to the Patriotic War of 1812, to the exploit of the Don Cossacks and to the chieftain M.I.Platov, unique signs, seals and coins.

There are displayed books devoted to the history of the Don Cossacks and Cossack Guards army, maps, spreadsheets, music, programs including those kept in private libraries of the members of the imperial family.

Many of the monuments from the Hermitage collection bear a memorial character and possess exceptional historical value.

The exhibition “Traces of Cossack Old Times…”works without days off from 10.00 to 17.00 (on Wednesday from 10.00 to 19.00) in the exhibition halls of “Sholokhov- Centre” of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve in Rostov-on-Don, 125/69 Bolshaya Sadovaya.
