NewsReconstruction of the House of Martyn Brothers is Coming to Completion22.09.2014The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov is completing the reconstruction of the site “The House of Martyn Brothers” in Rostov-on-Don (125/69 Bolshaya Sadovaya Street). The Museum cultural and exhibition centre is going to open soon to show constantly updated displays and travelling exhibitions. The building is situated in the historic centre of Rostov-on-Don on the territory of the former fortress of St.Dmitry Rostovsky. Its historic and architectural value is that it is the only mansion of its kind designed in the style of pseudo Gothics. In 1995, by Order № 176 of February, 20, of the President of the Russian Federation, the House of Martyn Brothers entered in the list of objects of historical and cultural heritage of federal importance. In April of 2007, the house was transferred to the balance of the Museum-Reserve. The design documentation is developed in consideration of the reconstruction of the lost architectural elements and details according to the extant analogues and documentary photographs. The project envisages adaptation of the building to modern needs with the existing laying out structures preserved. On survey results the building foundations were strengthened by installation of CFA piles. During the repair and reconstruction works the Museum intended to preserve a historical and cultural value of the decorative elements of façades, interiors including tile decorated Dutch heaters, bronze accessories, a grand staircase of prefabricated metal alloy ornamented and curly elements representing an example of art casting of the Rostov plant “John Martyn and Ko”of thelate XIX century. The building is equipped with modern technical facilities. At present, the work on the reconstruction of the façades, balconies, plinth coating with granite slabs is being completed, as well as the activities are carried out to ensure the necessary degree of protection of the exhibition halls on the ground floor. The site is reconstructed with the historic look preserved. On the main southern façade there is installed a guarding board bearing “The House of Martyn Brothers, the monument of federal importance. 1893. Architect N.M.Sokolov. Protected by the State.”
