The Jubilee of Sholokhov Museum: from the Past into the Future

10.07.2014

On July, 11, it is the 30th anniversary of the day when the RSFSR Council of Ministers adopted resolution №306 “On Immortalizing the Memory of M.A.Sholokhov, twice Hero of Socialist Labour, Writer and Public Figure”. By this document the establishment of the Museum-Reserve in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya was acknowledged and its structure and activity area were determined.

The National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve today is a unique collection of memorial objects telling about the life and work of M.A.Sholokhov, the great Russian writer, about the history and culture of the Don region, the protected scenic nature, monuments of history, culture and archeology. The Museum is listed in the Code of the Most Valuable Objects of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of the Russian Federation.

The first director of the Museum of the Nobel Prize winner in his home country was N.A.Bulavin. It was he who framed the main idea of development of the Museum, which has turned into a complex Museum-Reserve. Nikolay Alexandrovich, a brilliant organizer and mastermind, made up a team of associates.

The experts of the leading Russian museums, archives and scientific centres, artists and creative teams were of great methodological and practical assistance in the formation and development of the young Museum.

The residents of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya willingly shared their memories about Sholokhov, donated valuable documents and objects to the Museum.

In 1988, Sholokhov Museum was headed by V.V.Sukovatov, and in 2001 – by A.M.Sholokhov, who had worked as the Museum deputy director for cultural and business connections.

Now Sholokhov Museum is engaged in extensive exhibition, archival, research, educational, publishing, environmental and tourist activity; it participates in the international and all-Russian museum events, exhibitions, tourist and environmental competitions, holds scientific and practical conferences, literary and folklore, literary and ethnographic holidays, environmental rallies and actions, joint educational projects with mass media and educational institutions. The best museums of Russia show their exhibitions in the “People’s House”.

The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov is awarded the Certificate of the European Association “The Best in Heritage”; it is a multiple winner in the all-Russian and international museum forums, the laureate of Y.Senkevich National Tourist Prize and literary prize “Alexander Nevsky”; it is awarded gold medal “National Heritage” of the Charitable Foundation “Patrons of the Century”, Silver Crown and Diploma in the contest “Leaders of the Tourindustry”, Grand-Prix of the “Intermuseum-2005” festival, Grand-Prix of the national environmental prize “EcoWorld-2009” and other awards.

The Museum successful activity is based on the coordinated and collective work of the staff that has become an integral organism. Each of the museum workers does his best for every visitor to discover some new knowledge for himself, get interested in reading Sholokhov’s books and come here again.

Today Sholokhov Museum-Reserve is one of the most interesting museums of Russia and Europe. Though far from railway and big cities, Sholokhov’s home country becomes more and more attractive for Russian and foreign tourists, and for admirers of Sholokhov’s talent, who want to penetrate into the creative laboratory of the writer and go by the roads of Sholokhov’s personages.

By the 30th anniversary the Museum-Reserve has gained a diverse and powerful potential to be realized.

The Museum is full of new ideas and projects aimed at arousing interest in each visitor and becoming a binding thread between the peoples and generations.
