Memory Day of the Great Writer

21.02.2014

Today is Memory Day of M.A.Sholokhov, the great Russian writer, the Nobel Prize winner in literature.

The heart of Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov stopped beating on the 21st of February, 1984, at 1:40 a.m. He was buried in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, on the steep bank of the Quiet Don, which he glorified in his works.

30 years have passed, and today, like every year on this day, the burial place of the writer is attended by hundreds of people to lay flowers and pay tribute to the man, whose life was to serve to the people and his Country.

An evening party dedicated to the memory of Sholokhov will be held in the Palace of Culture in Vyoshenskaya. The guests will hear a living word of Sholokhov, favourite songs of the writer, classic and folk music.

The literary and musical performance “Your Sholokhov” will tell about the great contribution the national writer made with his talent and work into the life of his native country and the people. Mikhail Alexandrovich is known to be sensitive and responsive to the grief of others. He is well remembered and loved by all who met and knew him.

Lots of letters and telegrams came from all parts of the country. The address was simple:”Vyoshenskaya, to Sholokhov”. Thousands of letters are kept in our Museum. And each letter keeps a little part of the heart warmth of the people who wrote to Sholokhov. And in the answers to thousands of addressees there is felt an inexhaustible love of Mikhail Alexandrovich in his simple signature on the letter: “Your Sholokhov”.

The writer didn’t like to tell about himself leaving no lengthy memoirs or diaries. He said: “If you want to learn about me, read my books”. Sholokhov’s books are known and read in 90 languages of the five continents. His works are published in total circulation of more than 100 million copies. And now as well, they bring Russia together with all the peoples of the Earth.
