To Preserve the Unique Memorials of History and Literature

04.12.2013

Identification and preservation of cultural heritage is one of the activities of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve. The Museum comprises 19 structures: the house, where in 1905, the future writer was born and lived till 1910; the house, where M.A.Sholokhov lived and worked in 1919–1926; the house, where in 1928–1935, the writer lived and worked over his novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”; the memorial house, where M.A.Sholokhov lived from 1949 till 1984; the building of the Karghin parochial school, where Misha Sholokhov studied; the farmyard of T.A.Karghin in Stanitsa Karghinskaya and others.

The work on conservation of the cultural heritage includes reconstruction of the objects and their adaptation for current use, repair of the engineering systems, restoration and strengthening of surface and underground structures of the buildings.

During the restoration of cultural heritage the Museum experts pay special attention to restoring the historic image of the object: window framing in the form of carved pediments, platbands, shutters, the design of wooden cornices and narrow balcony around the house, wooden siding of the walls, their clay covering and whitewashing.

In most cases in the restoration of old buildings the former bearing structures are used: the main walls, flooring, staircases and stairs. The repair of Russian stoves, earthen and wooden floors, covering, whitewashing and painting of the walls, restoration of metal and reed roofs, downspouts, wooden carved porches, brick walls, cornices of the early XX century, is carried out with the use of the old technologies.

All the works provide for the objects of cultural heritage to recover their former image for our descendants to see them the same as they were in the lifetime of the great writer.
