The Don Grieves: M.M.Sholokhov has Gone

22.10.2013

Mikhail Mikhailovich Sholokhov, the chief consultant of the Museum-Reserve, the younger son of the great writer, died at his 79th, on October, 21.

Mikhail Mikhailovich Sholokhov, having stepped down as the head of the Rostov faculty of the Moscow branch of the USSR Academy of the Ministry of Home Affairs with the rank of colonel, permanently lived in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. He helped a great deal to the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, and since 1999 he had worked as chief consultant.

The museum workers always respected the opinion of Mikhail Mikhailovich, sought advice on any important issue. Hardly anyone could match him in understanding the creative genius of his father.

At the conferences, meetings, presentations and other events the museum workers, residents and guests of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya waited impatiently for Mikhail Mikhailovich to speak. His speeches were marked with precision, brevity and peculiar sense of Sholokhov’s humour. His knowledge was truly profound and diverse.

Until his last days M.M.Sholokhov lived the life of his country, worried about the spiritual state of the society, the loss of patriotism and morality, loss of civil liability; he worried about the environmental condition of his native River Don. No wonder one of his last interviews was called “Get Moving to Defend Moral Positions”.

A year ago Mikhail Mikhailovich planned a series of meetings with workers of culture, primarily with the museum workers of Vyoshenskaya. He wanted to speak about the most important, essential issues, about that only on the basis of morality the new generations will be able to achieve the country’s revival.

…Unfortunately, only one meeting took place.

The museum workers express their deepest condolences to the director of the Museum, Alexander Mikhailovich Sholokhov, Valentina Ismailovna Sholokhova, Svetlana Mikhailovna Sholokhova, Mariya Mikhailovna Sholokhova, to their families and friends. The museum workers grieve deeply about the hard loss which will be long pain in the hearts of all those who knew Mikhail Mikhailovich Sholokhov.

A funeral ceremony with M.M.Sholokhov will take place on October, 23, in the house of the Estate of M.A.Sholokhov (94, Podtyolkov Str.) from 9.00 to 12.00.
