New Catalogue is Published : “Sholokhov: Biography in Photos. 1905 – 1941”

19.12.2012

A new catalogue of the Museum-Reserve collection presents the writer’s photos of 1905 – 1941. Many photographs are published for the first time.

The catalogue consists of two parts. In the first part “Touches to the Portrait of M.A.Sholokhov”, where the pictures are arranged chronologically, we see a picture story about the life and work of the writer, his family and a social circle. The period of 1905 – 1941 (before the  Great Patriotic War began) is very important in Sholokhov’s biography: during these 36 years he made a good writer and personality. The pictures show Mikhail Alexandrovich in his childhood and youth, among his relatives and nearest people, at work, among the countrymen, at the meetings with the readers, at official events, travelling abroad, on vacation. Most valuable are the photos with autographs – kind Sholokhov’s apt words with great humour.

In the second part entitled “Family Album” there are photos of the writer’s family, relatives – his wife, Mariya Petrovna, their children, relatives of his father’s and mother’s kin. This part is prefaced with an article “On the Ancestry of M.A.Sholokhov”, which tells about the roots of the Sholokhovs’ kin, about the lives of the writer’s parents, their brothers and sisters, about the family of Mikhail Alexandrovich and Mariya Petrovna, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The catalogue was compiled and commented by L.V.Bukina and N.V. Kirsanova, senior researchers of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve.

The photo captions bear information about the people depicted, and the catalogue supplement informs about the photographers.

The catalogue will be interesting for specialists as well as for a wide readership taking an interest in the life and work of M.A.Sholokhov.
