A Monument to M.A.Sholokhov Is Erected in Belgorod

A monument to the great Russian writer M.A. Sholokhov was erected on October, 6, 2012, in Belgorod, near the main entrance to the local university. The author of the monument is a sculptor A.A. Shishkov, Honoured Artist of Russia.

The writer is shown in a sitting position wearing a thick knitted sweater and boots. The pedestal bears his appeal to the young countrymen: “I look at the youth with expectation like at the blooming apple-tree when expecting its first fruit…”

The opening ceremony gathered the university students, cultural and artistic community and town residents.

The public was welcomed by the Minister of education and science of the Russian Federation D.V. Livanov, the acting Governor of the Belgorod Region E.S. Savchenko, Metropolitan of Belgorod and Stary Oskol Ioann, the acting rector of the Belgorod State University O.N. Polukhin, the author of the monument, Honoured Artist of Russia, sculptor A.A. Shishkov.

D.V. Livanov said, that erecting the monument is another step “to restore respect for Russian culture, to restore spirituality, morality for the young people to know their history and to be optimistic about their future”.

It should be noted, that it was not the first monument to a well-known writer in Belgorod. Only recently the monuments to I.Bunin and S.Esenin were set up. Sholokhov monument was the next to continue this good tradition.
