Master Classes for Rostov Children

11.01.2012

The Youth Program  department of the State M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve continues the special course classes ”Regional Studies for the 8-9-year students of the “Evrika-Razvitiye” school (Rostov-on-Don)”.

The year of 2011 ended with a class held in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. In the home country of the writer the Rostov students learned about the life and art of Sholokhov attending the Museum-Reserve expositions and meeting with the old residents of Vyoshenskaya, close acquaintances of Mikhail Alexandrovich.

The Museum workers gave classes for the young learners of Sholokhov’s art: ”Education in Old School”, ”An Exhibit Brought into Focus. Life of the Museum Collection” and master-classes on making souvenirs of decorative thick felt and painting wooden spoons.

The class of “Decorative Thick Felt” held by the scientific worker S.A.Usova showed the history of thick felt production and use in ancient times and modern felting technologies. Using the wet felting method they made nice necklaces and bracelets.

At the class of modern spoon painting the students learned about the peculiarities of the original Vyoshenskaya spoon, about its genuine pattern colours and a tulip flower, the Don steppe symbol, which was used for woodenware decoration.

The young masters have learned, that the best wood for making spoons is cherry, pear and linden. They also realized for themselves, that wooden spoons flavour the food and protect from scalding while eating.

When painting spoons and making felt necklaces the Rostov students followed the given patterns and created original designs of their own.

The visit to Vyoshenskaya encouraged the “Evrika” students for learning history and literature, helped to practice the Upper Don traditional crafts and impressed them a lot.
