German Schoolchildren Visiting Don Cossacks

26.09.2011

In September a group of German schoolchildren, 8 form pupils from different cities of the federal land of Baden-Vurtemberg, visited Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. The Museum-Reserve of M.A. Sholokhov made a fascinating tour program for them.

The schoolchildren are the members of the project “International School”, they came to the Rostov Region to learn more about the life in Russia, make friends with young people of their age. For several days the German teenagers had become pupils of the Rostov school “Evrika-Razvitiye”, lived in the families of their new friends. To learn more about the traditions, culture and everyday life of the Don Cossacks they came to the home country of M.A. Sholokhov, the great writer of the novel, encyclopaedia of the Don Cossacks, “And Quiet Flows the Don”.

The children visited the Estate of Sholokhov, learned much about the life and work of the writer. In the Children’s Museum Centre they had classes “Visiting Don Cossacks”, where they learned about the peculiarities of the traditional Cossack houses, made clay articles and souvenirs, which they took as keepsakes about the Museum and Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya.

The students and teachers of the teacher-training college held an interesting meeting and tea party with merry games.

The folk group “Zarnitsa” performed a concert for the guests, who joined in singing a Cossack song. They had been taught this song by their teacher Olga Meier, who knows Russian and visited the Don country earlier.

In Kruzhilin Village the guests learned about the homeland of Sholokhov, tried traditional Cossack dishes.

The German guests were greatly impressed by their visit, they hoped to come to hospitable Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya and the Museum of the great Russian writer M.A. Sholokhov again.
