Like Scithians and Old Greeks

16.05.2011

The final session of the club “Young Archaeologist” was held on May, 13, in the Children’s Museum Centre.

The club members set out on a fascinating journey to the ancient world, where they met with the personages of the Old Greece myths: Clio, the muse of History, Calliope, the muse of poetry and art, and brave Jason who went by his ship “Argo” to Kolkhida for the Golden Fleece. The young archaeologists dressed in Old Greek self-made clothes, like Argonauts set out on a long journey.

“The Time Machine” took the children to the world of primitive people, where they competed in gathering and hunting, then to the Bronze Age, where ancient potters taught them to make vessels, then the children became Scithian nomads, equipped an archer for the campaign and an armed Scithian worrior. Finally, the children helped Jason to attain the Golden Fleece and to become the governor in his state.

This was the issue of the 3-year cycle of lessons. It has been the fourth group of the club members formed by the Museum pedagogues and a school teacher Irina Belikova who has been collaborating with the Museum for 11 years.

The cycle of lessons for primary schoolchildren is devised for 3 years to learn about the archaeological excavation finds of the Stone, Bronze and Iron ages.

Interactive games as an innovation form help in historical modelling and reconstructing the past times “plunging” into the antiquity. The children learn about the trades, make models of dwellings of the primitive man, instruments for labour and hunting, pottery, women’s decorations, coins.

The State M.A. Sholokhov Museum-Reserve considers education of the younger generation by the Museum means to be an issue of priority. The experience of the Museum pedagogues is shared with the teachers of the Rostov school “Evrika”, who were the members of the seminar held in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya at that time.
