In the Hospitable Cossack Houses

22.05.2010

Within a night in the stanitsas’s square near the church a new “village” had risen. Here settled hospitable hosts-performers from Millerovo, Kamensk, Chertkovo, Milyutinskiy, Neklinovskiy, Bokovskiy and Verkhnedonskoy districts of the Rostov Region.

From early morning on Saturday the stove fire smoked in the Cossack houses – “kurens”, the firesets and crockery rattled… Each kuren had its own accordion player. A virtuoso of accordion playing Nikolay Korolyov went round all the kurens playing accordion and everywhere was received like a relative.

A bayan-player Pavel Pribytkov from the Verkhnedonskoy kuren played such a perky “barynya”, that the knobs seemed to be melting. And the villagers from the Bokovskiy kuren managed to sing, dance, treat everyone and themselves to drinks and dishes.

The merry guests of the holiday left the hospitable kurens, singing newly learned songs.

Each kuren had a lavish menu, many sorts of drinks.

The Millerovo kuren offered rich bakery, the Verkhnedonskoy – fish, the Neklinovskiy – okroshka, the Kamensk – everything was tasty… A good provision was that of Milyutinskiy, let alone those of Chertkovskiy: the bacon was to perfection!

The guests tried drinks and sang songs so marvellously…

The folk festivity lasted till late at night. It was a real people’s holiday, and the people are masters in making holidays, so much the more, in Vyoshenskaya, the native land of Sholokhov.
