Soil Scientists from Saint-Petersburg Visited the Don Country

16.07.2010

The Estate of M.A. Sholokhov was visited by the workers of the Central Museum of Soil Science named after V.V. Dokuchayev, the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Chair of the Soil Sciences and Soil Ecology of the Biological and Soil Faculty of the Saint-Petersburg State University, who came to Vyoshenskaya in the soil studies expedition headed by professor B.F. Aparin.

Boris Fyodorovich Aparin is a scientist, the head of the chair of Soil Study and Soil Ecology of the Saint-Petersburg State University, the author of editions on soil study, the member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). For over 30 years he has been the leader of the V.V. Dokuchayev Central Museum of Soil Study, one of the world biggest museums of soil and ecological kind, keeping the richest collection of soils from different natural zones of the world.

It was a research expedition: the scientists studied the influence of the forest zone on the black earth characteristics, sampled soils to compare with those taken in those spots in 1915 during the Don expedition of the soil scientist Prokhorov.

Visiting the Estate of M.A. Sholokhov became a long-looked-for event for the guests. In the Guest Book professor B.F. Aparin put down the warm lines: “It has become an event for us, soil-scientists from the distant Saint-Petersburg, to visit the Don country, which beauty and warmth was so skillfully described by great M.A. Sholokhov. We looked forward to it and it has realized B.F. Aparin”.
