“The Garden of Leo Tolstoy” on the Land of the Quiet Don

30.11.2009

On November, 25, 2009, the excursion and exhibition centre “The People’s House of the State M.A. Sholokhov Museum-Reserve opened the exhibition “The Garden of Leo Tolstoy” afforded by the State Memorial and Natural Reserve “The Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy “Yasnaya Polyana”. The main subject of the exposition is creative work, family, estate.

The exhibition enables to learn more about L.N. Tolstoy and his surrounding, about his creative work, family traditions and way of life. The portraits of the writer and members of his family, children’s drawings of the younger Tolstoys, pictures, photos, books create the atmosphere in Yasnaya Polyana. The illustrations for the editions of different years, “The Notes for the Novel Conceived about the Epoch Late in the XVII-XIX centuries”, the materials for screenings and performances help to comprehend better the significance of the creative work heritage of L.N. Tolstoy.

Particularly interesting for the visitors are the memorial things which became symbols of the writer’s work – a pen, pencils, a desk-set of L.N. Tolstoy.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition presented a videofilm “Tolstoy and Sholokhov: The Two Destinies’, Two Epochs’ Intersection”. The directors of the two museums, descendants of the two great families of Russia, Vladimir Tolstoy and Alexander Sholokhov performed reciting from the story “The Cossacks” and the novel “Virgin Soil Upturned”.

The exhibition “The Garden of Leo Tolstoy” will work in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya till the end of February, 2010.
