Conference "The Reader in the Russian Literary Process of the XX Century"

On December 15-16, 2020 the staff of the Sholokhov Museum-Reserve took part in the international scientific conference "The reader in the Russian literary process of the XX century." It was organized by the Institute of World Literature named after Maxim Gorky of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IWL RAS) and is timed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the publication of the book by Adrian Toporov "Peasants about writers". 

The conference was held in Zoom format and brought together researchers from Moscow, Budapest (Hungary), St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Sheffield (Great Britain), Kaliningrad, Tambov, Ivanovo and stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. 

Welcoming remarks were made by Alexander Kudelin - Scientific Director of IWL RAS, Academician of RAS; Igor Toporov - grandson of writer, educator and publicist Adrian Toporov; Natalya Kornienko - Head of the Department of Contemporary Russian Literature and Literature of Russian Abroad of IWL RAS, Corresponding Member of RAS. 

The legacy of A. Toporov and his interpretation, the writer and the reader, letters from readers in the personal funds of writers and in other funds of archival repositories, the reader as a historical, literary and theoretical problem, the readership of the 20th century and their study, the types of readers formed by the text. All above is not a complete circle of questions which were discussed at the conference. The conference participants spoke about the perception of Sergey Yesenin, Alexey Tolstoy, Vsevolod Ivanov, Yury Olesha, Mikhail Sholokhov, Alexey Gorky, Vladimir. Mayakovsky, Nikolay Aseev, Boris Pasternak, Yuly Aykhenvald, Alexander Chayanov, Alexander Tvardovsky, Leonid Leonov. 

The leading researcher Lyudmila Razogreeva, researcher Ekaterina Karbysheva and senior researcher Elena Popova told in their speeches about the perception of Mikhail Sholokhov’s works by the readers. An important event of the conference was the presentation of the book "Please, respond me substential ..." Letters from readers to Mikhail Sholokhov 1929 - 1955 "(Moscow: IWL RAS, 2020. Editor-in-chief N.V. Kornienko) is a collective work of the staff of the Institute of World Literature named after Maxim Gorky of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Sholokhov Museum-Reserve, published in the year of the 115th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Sholokhov.
