The publication was financially supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The book represents the readers' letters of Mikhail Sholokhov. This mail is one of the largest and most unique in the history of Russian literature. First published letters from readers of 1925-1955 from the archives of Moscow, the National Sholokhov Museum-Reserve and the Archive of the Sholokhov family in a new way recreate the picture of the historical and literary process of the 20th century, reveal the content of the dialogue between Sholokhov and the reader, expand and deepen understanding not only of the history of Russian literature of the Soviet era, but in general of the 20th century of Russian culture as a century of the reader. The book is the result of a large-scale research project to identify and prepare for publication of readers' letters to Mikhail Sholokhov, as well as various editions and publishing houses. Readers' letters represent a unique example of a lively dialogue filled with the reflections of the authors of the letters (among them there were workers, peasants, people of different professions, front-line soldiers and emigrants who left their homeland) not only about literary texts, but also about the most important events in the life of the country at that time. On the preparation of this publication, which contains 520 letters from readers, scientists from the Institute of World Literature Natalya Kornienko, Galina Vorontsova, Elena Papkova, Olga Bystrova, Olesya Alexeeva, employees of the National Sholokhov Museum-Reserve Alexey Kochetov, Ekaterina Karbysheva, Elena Popova, Lyudmila Afanasyeva, Lyudmila Razogreeva. The executive editor of the publication is Doctor of Philology, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Natalya Kornienko.
