01.06.2020

45 years ago, in May 1975, the Presidium of the World Peace Council at its session held in Stockholm awarded Mikhail Sholokhov International Peace Prize in the field of culture for his outstanding contribution to strengthening peace and friendship between peoples.

On July 10, 1975, Secretary General of the World Peace Council, Romesh Chandra presented this high award to Sholokhov. He emphasized that the participants in the Stockholm session decided to reward with great enthusiasm. He also noted that Mikhail Sholokhov had made a great contribution to the expansion of cultural cooperation between peoples. “You are one of the participants in the Wroclaw congress of cultural figures in defense of peace, you were at the origins of the movement of peace supporters, you have done a lot to unite cultural figures who advocate peace. Your outstanding works, passionate statements in defense of peace, against the threat of a new war have earned you the deep respect of millions of people on all continents”, said R. Chandra. In conclusion, he wished Mikhail Sholokhov new creative achievements, strength and energy, new great successes in noble work for the good of the world.

Sholokhov warmly thanked for the high award and said: “This honorable award obliges me as a writer and participant in the movement of peace supporters. As I understand it, from us, writers, from all cultural figures, much more is required at the present time to help ensure lasting peace on earth and to put an end to the danger of a war forever. As for me, I will not regret all my strength for this. "

On the same day Mikhail Sholokhov was congratulated on this award by the writer, editor-in-chief of the magazine "Ogonek" A. Safronov, Deputy Chairman of the Soviet Peace Committee O. Kharkhardin and Executive Secretary of the Committee M. Kotov.

Museum visitors can see the award at the historical and memorial exhibition “Mikhail Sholokhov. Time and Destiny”.
