NewsInteractive Lesson “Secrets of the Cossack Kitchen” for schoolboys27.11.2019Sholokhov Museum-Reserve, passed an interactive lesson for younger students on the Cossack courtyard of the late XIX - early XX centuries in the farm Kruzhilinsky. During this lesson the guys learned more about traditional Cossack cuisine. We have always loved tasty food on the Don, and our attitude to food has been careful, we have valued every crumb of bread. The Museum staff told the children that there was a certain ritual before dining. Here is how the old-timer of the Vyoshenskaya village, local historian A.P. Gribanov, describes this: “Usually, a Cossack family sat down at a table three times a day: to have breakfast, lunch, dinner. Before sitting at the table, every member of the family washed their hands, wiped them with a canvas towel common for the family, and stood baptized on the icon in the front corner, while saying a low voice a prayer, usually “Our Father”. At the table, there was a start at the sign of the elder. Cabbage soup, porridge noodles were eaten from a common cup with wooden spoons. "Meat, dumplings, pancakes, cucumbers, tomatoes were eaten with hands from a common dish, fried meat was served on a table in a roasting pan or in a pan." The children have learned about the customs and culture of the Cossack feast often brought from military campaigns, about dishes that recipes were passed down from generation to generation. During the master class the guys learned how to knead dough for vareniki (dumplings) and roll thin dough for Cossack noodles. The lesson ended with a delicious lunch, where children enjoyed sour noodles according to the old recipe, vareniki (dumplings) with potatoes, ruddy pies and lush bursaki (doughnut), and traditional stewed fruit and berries. |
