Visit of Nikita Khrushchev to stanitsa Veshenskaya

26.08.2019

60 years ago, at the end of August 1959, Nikita Khrushchev — First Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR — visited Veshenskaya at the invitation of Mikhail Sholokhov. His wife and daughter arrived together with Nikita Khrushchev.

Dear guests were greeted with flowers and bread and salt by Mikhail Sholokhov and his wife Maria, members of the party organization, leading workers of agricultural and industrial production of the Rostov, Stalingrad and Voronezh regions.

In the afternoon on the stanitsa square a rally of many took place. Before the inhabitants of the stanitsa Nikita Khrushchev made a speech in which important issues of the domestic life of the country were highlighted, the enormous educational significance of the work of Mikhail Sholokhov was emphasized, major problems of foreign policy and international life were posed. After the rally, a large concert of the Rostov ensemble of folk singing and dancing of the Don Cossacks was given directly on the square. On the same day, Khrushchev and Sholokhov took a fascinating walk along the Don, visited picturesque corners of wonderful Don nature, then hunted, rested well and returned home only late in the evening.

The next day in the district House of Culture Nikita Khrushchev arranged a reception, which was attended by party workers, leaders of the Rostov region, collective farm leaders and heads of major enterprises, representatives of science and culture - more than 100 people in all. The reception was held in a hearty, friendly atmosphere. Mikhail Sholokhov, on behalf of all those present, thanked Nikita Khrushchev “for the honor rendered to the Don farmers by his visit.”

Nikita Khrushchev’s visit to Don Cossacks was a great joyful holiday for the life of the stanitsa Veshenskaya. In the funds of the Museum-Reserve M. Sholokhov there are kept photographs that tell about the stay of Nikita Khrushchev in Veshenskaya.
