National Competition “Russian Tree of the Year 2019”

31.05.2019

Voting for the main tree of the country in 2019 continues in the competition “Russian Tree of the Year” organized by the noncommercial partnership “Healthy Forest”. Our Giant Oak of Vyoshenskaya is also added to the list of unique trees. You can vote for it till October 1, 2019, on the website of the All-Russian program “Trees are Monuments of Wildlife”. One of the aims of the competition is to inspire active citizens to take care of the environment, to draw their attention to the importance of the old-growth trees in the natural and cultural heritage of Russia which requires our care and protection.

The competition “Russian Tree of the Year” is a national stage of the annual international competition “European Tree of the Year”.

The national stage voting list includes 12 unique historical trees from Tatarstan, Chechnya, , Udmurtia, North Ossetia, Kalmykia, the Leningrad, Irkutsk, Pskov, Rostov (Giant Oak of Vyoshenskaya) and Ivanovo regions, from Tambov and Moscow.

It depends on our choice which main tree of the country will represent our country in the European competition in 2020.

The Vyoshensky Giant Oak aged over 400 is entered in the National Registry of Old-Growth Trees of Russia under number 30. It was granted the status of an all-Russian rarity protected by the state. The unique tree grows on the territory of the Kolundayev Village Forestry, 8 kilometers north of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. The trunk circumference of the monument of nature is 7.6 m, the tree crown casts on the ground a summer afternoon shadow of 600 square metres. The total trunk volume is 42 square metres.

Vote for the Giant Oak on the website of the all-Russian program “Trees are Monuments of Wildlife”. If our patriarch wins, it will represent all Russia in Europe 2020.
