“To Dear Mikhail Alexandrovich…”

During the Great Patriotic War soldiers read the works by M.A.Sholokhov at the fronts, in the trenches, they read the newspapers to holes, went to attack with them. Each fighter was addressed the words: “The Motherland will never forget either your exploits or sufferings”.

The theme of the Great Patriotic War excited the writer up to the last days of his life. Answering the question, what was the war for M.A.Sholokhov, his elder daughter Svetlana said in one of the interviews: “As for all people – it was a terrible tragedy, loss of the relatives, loss of everything dear. The strongest nervous shock, loss of the archives and the library”.

The front essays, stories “The Science of Hatred” and “The Fate of a Man”, unfinished novel “They Fought for Their Country” is a tribute of deep respect for the hero people, for all who experienced the hardships of the war, who defended the freedom of our Motherland in battles.

Annually, before the Victory Day M.A.Sholokhov received a great number of greetings. He was congratulated by his family and friends, veterans of the Great Patriotic War, soldiers, students and schoolchildren, teachers, authorities, figures of culture and art, and numerous readers. Greeting postcards and letters on May days came from all parts of our big country. Each of them bore warmth and good wishes to their beloved writer:

“Dear Mikhail Alexandrovich! I sincerely congratulate you personally and your family on Victory Day and sincerely wish you good health, long years of life and a new creative success! Andrey Trofimovich Litvinenko, war veteran, Senior Lieutenant, engineer”;

“We congratulate the soldier writer, veteran of the Great Patriotic War, creator of immortal images of the Soviet soldier and toiler on the 30th anniversary of the Victory over the fascist Germany. Students of the 10th forms. The Krasnodar Territory, Kropotkin, secondary railway school № 47”;

“The newspaper “Krasnaya Zvezda” sends sincere congratulations to dear Mikhail Alexandrovich on the occasion of the Victory Day!”;

“Dear Mikhail Alexandrovich, let me sincerely congratulate you on the Day of Victory over the Hitler’s Germany – Day of May 9! My father died in this war under Leningrad having left us five and our mother the sixth. That is why I

congratulate you like my father and as my favourite writer. Your books and films based on them have been read and watched again and again. Especially “The Fate of a Man”. With compliments, Veniamin Chernyagov. The Kirov Region”.

The Great Victory Day had always been the main holiday for Mikhail Alexandrovich. So it was and always remains as such for the whole of our country, which people defeated fascism and brought freedom to Europe.
