Welcome to the World of the Literary Genius!

Dear connoisseurs and admirers of the talent of the great Russian writer M.A.Sholokhov! We welcome you to the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, where you can get into the world of the literary genius.

Visiting the Estate of M.A.Sholokhov you will learn about the history of building the house, where the writer lived with his family during 1949 – 1984, about how and when the light two-storied house with a terrace and a balcony became the central structure of the Museum-Reserve, will see historical photos of the Estate of M.A.Sholokhov.

Attending the exhibition “Outbuilding.Summer Kitchen of the Sholokhovs” you will get into the atmosphere of the Sholokhovs’ home life, will see the “kingdom of Nyura”– the kitchen with the preserved Russian stove, tableware used by the Sholokhovs, will learn about the favourite dishes of the family, and about the cook Anna Antonovna Dolgova, affectionately called in the family Nyura or Annushka, an uncommon, kind and cheerful woman, who lived with the Sholokhovs over 45 years and was called a member of the family.

In the lounge, you will see unique exhibits – an iron bed and a blanket from the prewar Sholokhov’s house. These things dated the 1930s were used by the family during the evacuation and miraculously survived to our days.

In the garage there are perfectly preserved cars which belonged to Sholokhov: ГАЗ-21 “Волга” (Volga), which was used for official and business trips of the writer, ГАЗ-69, which served for the hunting and fishing outings, and УАЗ-469 improved by the workers of the Ulyanovsk motor plant. Here in the garage, you will see a car “Победа M-20” (Pobeda meaning Victory), which earlier belonged to Pliyev, the Army General, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Commander in Chief of the North-Caucasian Military District.

Walking along the path through the garden you can enjoy the sight of the majestic River Don glorified by Sholokhov in his works, just in the place, where the writer himself liked to admire the scene.

You can visit the tomb of the great writer and his wife Mariya Petrovna.

Accompanied by the guide you will pass to the excursion and exhibition centre “People’s House” to see the authentic interiors of the writer’s house. The exhibitions will tell you about the life of Sholokhov during 1950 – 1980, his work

over the short story “The Fate of a Man”, the second book of the novel “Virgin Soil Upturned” and the novel “They Fought for Their Country”.

You will see what situation was surrounding the writer and feel the atmosphere reigning in his house during the writer’s life and favouring him for his literary work.

You will visit the writer’s studies and learn about the purpose of each of them, look into one of the favourite rooms of Sholokhov family and see numerous presents and souvenirs given to Mikhail Alexandrovich by the admirers of his talent, the Nobel Prize Diploma and Medal, evening dresses which Sholokhov and his family were wearing at the Nobel Prize Awarding ceremony in Stockholm, in 1965, other items telling about that significant event.
