Alexander Sholokhov: “The Disaster to be Understood and Appreciated”

Yesterday there was the largest fire in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. This grief has united the world community. Alexander Mikhailovich Sholokhov, President of the ICOM of Russia, the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Culture of the RF State Duma, marked: “The fair in Paris is not only a blow on patriotic feelings of the Frenchmen, it is not simply a loss of one of the main symbols of the city, the country, the Christian world in general, but it is also the heaviest loss for the world culture.

This is a disaster that has yet to be understood and appreciated. This is a problem that will need to be solved for many years nevertheless leaving many questions without solution. These are the conclusions to be drawn and the lessons to be learned. All of us must realize that our heritage is one of the most important concerns of the state and society, it cannot be saved on it, we are orphaned without it and lose ground for our self-identification. And besides, we have to think about the fact that the monuments keeping our history must be paid attention to not only when we lose them”.
