NewsGeneral Baklanov is 21015.03.2019Today it is the 210th birthday anniversary of Yakov Petrovich Baklanov (1809–1873), Major General of the Don Cossacks Army, Hero of the Caucasian War. In the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” by M.A.Sholokhov the name of Baklanov is mentioned more than 10 times. For the first time it was mentioned at the wedding of Grigory Melekhov and Natalya, when at the table one of the guests of old age introduced himself: “Wachtmeister of Baklanov’s regiment Maxim Bogatyryov”. And he added: “I served with the deceased Baklanov, the kingdom of heaven to him, we were conquering the Caucasus…” In another episode an old Cossack Alexey Uryupin nicknamed Chubaty, teaches a young Cossack Grigory Melekhov a Baklanov’s sword blow cutting with his sword an old birch tree: “See? Learn. There was Baklanov-ataman, did you hear? He had a sword with a grip filled with mercury. Heavy to raise it, but cuts – a horse is chopped in half. Here it is!” Cossack songs dedicated to Baklanov often mention “terrible Baklanov’s blow”. Yakov Petrovich Baklanov was an active fighter in the Russian-Turkish War (1828–1829), Caucasian War (1817–1864), Eastern (Crimean War, 1853–1856) and in suppression of the Polish uprising (1863–1864). In 1904, the 17th Don Cossack regiment was named after him in his honour. During the 35 years of his military service the General terrified the enemies with his gigantic look; he received many combat awards including orders of St. George of the four degrees, of St.Vladimir the second degree, of St.Stanislav and St.Anna of the first degrees, Golden Weapon and “the greatest god’s favours”. Today the name of Baklanov is given to a stanitsa in the Dubovsky District the Rostov Region, a prospect in Novocherkassk and a Cossack cadet corps in Shakhty the Rostov Region. In 1911, the remains of Y.P.Baklanov were transported from Petersburg and buried in the Novocherkassk Military Cathedral. And his tombstone brought from the northern capital was erected in the Cathedral Square. Tatyana Kosheleva |
