Merry Shrovetide Week

11.03.2019

Last week, a merry holiday of Shrovetide (Maslenitsa) was marked with folk festivities, games, museum workshops for schoolchildren, and exhibitions. People say, if Shrovetide days are merry, the next year will be a success.

In Sholokhov gymnasium the first-year students waited for Shrovetide impatiently: together with their parents they made pancakes with different fillings, dressed in smart clothes and joined the holiday of a farewell to the winter and a welcome to the coming spring.

In museum class the children learned about the meaning of each day of Shrovetide, about the way people made a farewell to winter in the olden days, heard traditional spring calling songs, circled merrily “on the carousel” with colourful ribbons and took part in games and amusements. Boys liked fights with bags and rope pulling, girls deftly wove huge braids in the team competition. The class ended with a song “Farewell, Shrovetide!”

The holiday was held at the week-end in the Museum Stables and in the square of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. The guests of the holiday rode on horses and ponies, competed in strength and agility, danced and sang songs, and enjoyed pancakes with honey and tea. This was a farewell to the winter and welcome to the coming spring!
