The V International School Essay Contest on the Works by M.A.Sholokhov

The department of Russian Literature of the Institute of Humanitarian Sciences of the Moscow City Pedagogical University jointly with the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve and the editorial board of the scientific and educational journal “Mir Sholokhova” announce the V International School Essay Contest on the works of M.A.Sholokhov to be held during March 1–30, 2019.

The aim of the contest: to attract students of secondary schools and secondary special educational institutions to creative exploration of the artistic riches of Russian literary classics, the works of one of its most prominent representatives – M.A.Sholokhov.

Essay Topics:

1. “Humanity is not fragmented into a host of individuals floating as if in the state of weightlessness like cosmonauts released outside the Earth’s gravity” (M.A.Sholokhov): individual and universal things in the works by the writer.

2. What theatrical performance on the work by M.A.Sholokhov do you remember most and why?

3. How has the scientific publication of the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” by M.A.Sholokhov changed your perception of the novel (on the example of several fragments)?

4. The role of grading in the works by M.A.Sholokhov.

5. My Sholokhov.

Essay Requirements:

  • matching one of the suggested topics;
  • text originality;
  • lack of incorrect borrowing from the materials posted on the Internet and other sources (the works with such borrowings – quotes from other texts without quote marks and references – are rejected, the contestant certificate in this case is not issued);
  • textual reference to the works by M.A.Sholokhov both included in the school curriculum and outside it;
  • clarity of the structure, consistency and validity of the conclusions;
  • disclosure in specific essay positions of stylistic and content riches and educational potential of Sholokhov’s works of fiction;
  • approximate volume: 3 - 4 notebook sheets (1.5–2 pages A-4).

The best works will be marked with diplomas, and the texts of the contest winners are to be published in the journal “Mir Sholokhova”.

The Jury: Y.A.Dvoryashin (chairman), Doctor of Philological Sciences, professor, the RF Honoured Worker, a leading researcher of the World Literature Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, chief editor of the journal “Mir Sholokhova”; A.I.Smirnova (co-chairman), Doctor of Philological Sciences, professor, head of the department of Russian Literature of the Moscow City Pedagogical University; L.P.Razogreyeva, general researcher of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve; S.A.Vasilyev, Doctor of Philological Sciences, professor of the department of Russian Literature of the Moscow City Pedagogical University; T.O.Osipova, Candidate of Philological Sciences, docent of the department of National Literature of the South Federal University (Rostov-on-Don).

The essay texts in the form of scanned sheets, or typed on a computer in the Word text editor are to be sent to: mirSholokhova@yandex.ru before April 1, 2019, with obligatory indication of the name and surname of the author of the work, the name and surname of the teacher, who helped in the work (if he did), the school (official name of the educational institution, website of the organization), the form, contact e-mail and telephone numbers. The essays are not reviewed.
