February 21, is the 35th anniversary of the death of Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov, the great Russian writer, the Nobel Prize winner in literature.

The heart of the writer stopped beating on February 21, 1984, at 1.40 after midnight. He was buried in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, on the steep bank of the Quiet Don glorified by him. Numerous events dedicated to the memory of the great writer are annually held on February days in Russia and foreign countries.

You are welcome on February 21, to the free run of all the exhibitions of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov (in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, Stanitsa Karghinskaya and Kruzhilin Village – from 9.00 to 16.00, in Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve in Rostov-on-Don – from 10.00 to 17.00).

In Moscow on this day, at 12.00, members of the Union of Russian writers, scholars and admirers of the works of the Nobel Prize winner will lay flowers at the monument of M.A.Sholokhov in Gogol Boulevard. In Rostov-on-Don flowers will be laid at the monument of M.A.Sholokhov at the embankment and at the bust in Pushkin Street, and in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya – at the foot of the bronze bust of the writer at the River Don embankment and at his tomb.

In Vyoshenskaya central library at 11.00, there will be held a meeting of the literary association “Vyoshenskiye Rodniki” (springs of Vyoshenskaya) joined by the Upper Don writers and poets.

At 15.00, an evening meeting “In the Time of Turmoil…” will be held in the Palace of Culture of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. It will gather the writer’s countrymen, representatives of public organizations, delegations of the northern districts of the Rostov Region. We invite the residents and guests of Vyoshenskaya. The admission is free.

A literary musical composition will tell about the events of a century ago – the Upper Don Cossack insurrection of 1919. M.A.Sholokhov was the first to tell the wide public about it in his novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”. He brightly and significantly showed its roots and causes, brought the truth about the deepest tragedy of the people to the readers. At the meeting the viewers will learn about the pre-rebellion events, about the course of the fighting, will see photos and footage chronicles of that time and will hear an immortal Sholokhov’s word.

On these days Sholokhov-Centre (Rostov-on-Don) shows an exhibition “My Dear, Dear Family…”– the biggest in the history of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov: there are over 500 unique exhibits including over 100 – from the memorial house at the Estate of M.A.Sholokhov in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. The exhibition will tell the rostovites and guests of the regional centre about the big and friendly family of the great writer, about the house, where the Sholokhovs lived from 1949, about the family traditions. On February 21, there will be held a thematic excursion dedicated to the Memory Day of the writer. The exhibition will run till February 25, 2019.

In Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (Russian House), on the writer’s Memory Day will open an exhibition “The World of Sholokhov: Don Cossacks”, which will tell the residents of Belgrade and numerous tourists about the wonderful world of the Don Cossacks – the main hero of Sholokhov’s works.

The exhibition shows photos, books by Sholokhov in foreign languages, objects of Cossack everyday life. The well-known Sholokhov scholar Bogdan Kosanovich notes: “During the civil wars in the former Yugoslavia the interest of Serbian readers in Sholokhov did not fade, but even increased. Apparently, there was something to learn from the famous Russian writer, who showed the tragic theme – war and man – in a new way.”

The exhibition will run during the Days of Russian Spiritual Culture in Serbia until March 2, 2019.

In the Rostov Region and other regions of Russia, there will be held thematic socials, readers’ conferences, talks, contests devoted to the life and work of M.A.Sholokhov.
