Exhibition “Mikhail Sholokhov: Don Cossacks” will be Shown in Serbia

12.02.2019

The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov will take part in the Days of Spiritual Culture of Russia in Serbia. On February 21, 2019, on the memory day of the great writer, the Russian House in Belgrade will open an exhibition “Mikhail Sholokhov: Don Cossacks”.

The visitors will see the photos, books by M.A.Sholokhov published in many foreign languages, illustrations by the famous artists, objects of culture and life of the Upper Don Cossacks.

In Serbia, the work of the writer was known from 1931, when a short story “Family Man” by M.A.Sholokhov was translated into the Serbian-Croatian language. Later, the first and the second books of the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” and the works about the Great Patriotic War were published.

As Bogdan Kosanovich, the well-known Sholokhov scholar, professor of the Novi Sad university, notes that during the civil wars in the former Yugoslavia, the readers’ interest in Sholokhov did not fade away, but got increased: “Apparently there was something to learn from the famous Russian writer, who showed the tragic theme – war and man – in a new way.” At present, educational programs of Serbia and Montenegro provide for the mandatory study of the works by Sholokhov.

The exhibition show will be accompanied by the demonstration of the multimedia materials: the visitors will see fragments of the documentaries about the life and work of the great writer, video films about the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, will hear folk Cossack songs.

It is interesting, that in February, one of the TV channels of Serbia shows on weekends a serial film “The Quiet Don” (film director Sergey Ursulyak) with subtitles in Serbian.

The exhibition will run in the Russian House – Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Belgrade during February 21 –March 1, 2019.
