Opening of the Exhibition “Novarro. Africa” in Sholokhov-Centre

An opening ceremony of the exhibition of African sculpture and masks from the collection of the world-known photographer Eddy Novarro took place on January 22, 2019, in Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov.

The collection is presented by the State Museum-Reserve of V.D.Polenov, where it was donated by the wife of the photographer.

The guests of the ceremony were welcomed by Olga Alexandrovna Anistratenko, Director of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov. She said that “thanks to the exhibition the Rostovites and guests of the southern capital have got a unique opportunity to learn about the mysterious for each of us African art”.

The head of the exhibition department of the Museum-Reserve of V.D.Polenov, Nadezhda Vasilyevna Bayeva, underlined that there are no such collections either in Russian or European museums, and added: “Eddy Novarro could never think of his collection to be shown in the museum, he made it for his own pleasure…”

After the first tour about the exhibition the visitors were shown a documentary “Africa will Suggest” which premiere took place at “Artdocfest” late in 2018. The guests of Sholokhov-Centre together with the film personage Jane, a citizen of Petersburg, made a travel to Western Africa.

The exhibition “Novarro. Africa” will run in the attic of Sholokhov-Centre until February 20.
