Exhibition “Novarro. Africa”
16.01.2019On January 22, 2019, Sholokhov-Centre starts showing the exhibition “Novarro.Africa”, which will enable the residents and guests of Rostov-on-Don to discover for themselves the original art of the distant and mysterious Black continent.
The visitors will see a unique collection of African sculpture and masks of the world known photographer Eddy Novarro presented by the State Memorial Historical, Artistic and Natural Museum-Reserve of V.D.Polenov.
Eddy Novarro takes a special place in the world of modern photography. In his works he shows feelings and emotions of major politicians, members of reigning families, Hollywood stars, famous writers, poets, painters including Mark Shagal, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, Endy Warhole.
In the 1950s of the XX century he made a number of visits to the countries of Tropical Africa (Zambia, Congo, Mali, Nigeria, Burkina Faso,Ivory Coast,some areas of Tanzania), where from he brought ritual masks; sculptures symbolizing fertility, which was a pledge of tribe vitality; charms of various shapes protecting the hearth from evil spirits; symbols of the hierarchical position of the owner of an image in the tribe; household items with ritual elements.
African folk art of carving has gained worldwide fame, and everyone who visits the exhibition will have the opportunity to touch the mysterious art of distant Africa.
The exhibition “Novarro.Africa” will run during January 22 – February 20, 2019, in Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov in: Rostov-on-Don, 125/69, Bolshaya Sadovaya, from 10.00 to 17.00 (Wednesday and Friday from 10.00 to 19.00), Monday is a day off.
