“Forest Tier” Gathered Young Naturalists

21.10.2018

The Autumn Environmental Week of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov was followed by the relay-quiz “Forest Tier” which was joined by nearly 100 students of the 8––10th forms from the schools of the Rostov, Volgograd and Voronezh regions, and the Republic of Kalmykia.

The young foresters were greeted by V.D. Astashov, Head of the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Rostov Region, and N.V.Ivanisova, professor of the Novocherkassk A.Kortunov Engineering and Reclamation Institute, Candidate of biological sciences. They told the students about the great importance of forest in human life, about the need to protect and preserve it for future generations.

The members of the relay-quiz “Forest Tier” were lectured by T.Y.Turchin, Deputy Director of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov on Environment and Rational Land Use, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences. In six working areas the teams identified the main tree species, plants and birds of the Don country, soil texture and basic biometrics of the trees.

The students showed their knowledge in different fields of ecological sciences on each stage. The winners were congratulated by A.N.Palatny, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Rostov Region. He handed the children a champion cup, memory medals and presents.

The relay-quiz is held with the aim of expanding general understanding by children the forest ecosystems, developing their primary skills and habits in forester’s profession. Their participation in the relay-quiz is expected to contribute to their environmental education and become an incentive for some of them to connect their lives with the environmental profession.
