Garden of Russian Writers Named after M.A.Sholokhov is Laid in Stanitsa Karghinskaya

A ceremony of laying the Garden of Russian Writers Named after M.A.Sholokhov took place on October 7, 2018, in Stanitsa Karghinskaya. It was joined by the well-known writers, who came from different regions of Russia, researchers, famous actors, workers of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, residents of Stanitsa Karghinskaya.

Over 100 years ago, on the right bank of the River Chir, Timofey Karghin built a mill complex, and on the left bank, opposite the mill, he laid a big orchard on the area of 1 ha. Many years have passed since then, the garden was lost.

In 2010, on the initiative of A.M.Sholokhov, the writer’s grandson who at that time was Director of the Museum-Reserve, and with assistance of Y.A.Pyatikov, Head of the Bokovsky District Administration, and the students of the Karghin school named after M.A.Sholokhov, there began a restoration of the garden with old varieties of apple-trees and pear trees. Today the trees are fruit bearing.

In 2018, the Union of Russian Writers initiated laying a garden in the homeland of the world-known writer M.A.Sholokhov, the Nobel Prize winner and the board member of the USSR Union of Writers during 1934 – 1984. The action of planting fruit trees was dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Union of Russian Writers foundation and to the 95th anniversary of the Rostov Region writers’ organization.

Planting the orchard “Garden of Russian Writers Named after MA.Sholokhov” was joined by the delegations from the Moscow, Rostov, Tambov regional departments of the Union of Russian Writers, from the Michurin State Agrarian University and the Federal I.Michurin Research Centre, the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve, the Karghin school named after M.A.Sholokhov. The named trees were planted by N.F.Ivanov, Chairman of the Board of the Union of Russian Writers; A.S.Truba, professor of the Michurin State Agrarian University; Y.A.Meshcheryakov, Chairman of the Tambov regional department of the Union of Russian Writers; A.G.Beregovoy, Chairman of the Rostov regional department of the Union of Russian Writers; G.Y.Shcherbenyov, a selectionist gardener; L.V.Maltseva, Honored Actress of the USSR and Russia; Y.V.Nazarov, People’s Actor of the Russian Federation, and many others.

Greeting the guests O.A.Anistratenko, Director of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, noted the importance of the event and thanked the Union of Russian Writers for choosing Sholokhov country, namely Stanitsa Karghinskaya, where the author of “And Quiet Flows the Don” began his writing career, the place for planting the “jubilee” garden.

There were planted 60 apple-trees and 35 pear-trees presented by the Michurinsk selectionists. The seedlings were old Cossack varieties and new ones bred by the students of I.V.Michurin Research Centre. All the varieties are high yield, resistant to frost, diseases and pests.

A sign bearing information about the action and its participants was installed in the garden. In memory of the garden planting, A.S.Truba, Doctor of Economic Sciences, presented the Karghin students with the participation certificates and baseball caps.
